A trial begins today in Winnebago County for convict who is accused of setting up a diploma mill behind bars and getting inmates to pay tuition.
46-year-old Kenneth Shong allegedly coaxed other convicts into paying for distance learning from Carlingford University, which he claimed was sanctioned by the UK to offer online degrees through its London Campus.
Prosecutors say Shong is a career con man able to pull off such a scam.
The defense claims Shong believed the school was set up properly, and never intended to cheat anyone. A judge will decide the case in the three day trial.
